Casting Call: ‘Paper Girls’

By Hazel Romano | July 26, 2017

Last week’s installment of Casting Call put the spotlight on Image Comics’ Rat Queens. This week we’re giving a shot at assembling another Image dream team. In Paper Girls, sleepy 80’s suburban life is disrupted by mysterious, other-worldly forces. The travails of Erin, Mac, Tiffany, and KJ across space and time would make for an enthralling adaptation. It’s another tough call, but when is casting ever simple?

1. Lana Condor as Erin

Lana as Erin

Lana Condor gained recognition among comic audiences when she appeared as Jubilee in X-Men: Apocalypse.

Though vastly underused in the film, Lana gave fans a glimpse of her potential to play interesting, decisive characters such as Erin Tieng. Not only does she look the part, but her past comic book role gives her an edge. As Erin, Lana has the capacity to bring charm, in addition to the intensity required, for a great performance.

2. Natalia Dyer as KJ

Natalia Dyer as KJ

Natalia Dyer is known for her role as Nancy Wheeler in Netflix’s Stranger Things.

As the character Nancy, Natalia is no stranger herself to weird, out of this world mayhem set in the 80s. She’s a suitable fit for the role of KJ, who’s pegged as the privileged but level-headed one of the group. Despite KJ’s slim stature, like Natalia, she’s capable of holding her own while navigating a crisis in suburbia. Natalia has had her share of experience dealing with creepy happenings. After facing off with an inter-dimensional monster, aliens should be child’s play.

3. Jaylen Barron as Tiffany

Jaylen Barron boasts numerous credits on Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel. She’s been on shows like Good Luck Charlie, and even appeared on Showtime’s Shameless.

With her intellect, wit, and sharp tongue, Tiffany is a crucial and dynamic member. In the midst of an alien invasion, it helps to have decent knowledge of some high-tech gadgets. Though she’s not a household name in the business, Jaylen’s youth and experience shows that she’s capable of exhibiting the spunk required to give a fresh portrayal of Tiffany.

4. Maisie Williams as Mac

Maisie Williams is globally recognized as Arya Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones.

MacKenzie, or “Mac” as the girls call her, sports an unapologetic sailor’s mouth to complement her habit of chain-smoking. Her spitfire attitude and reckless abandon make it hard not to draw a comparison to Thrones’ Arya. Both share a disregard for gender norms; Mac was the first “paper boy” who wasn’t a boy, while Arya is the resident tomboy of Winterfell. Maisie’s demonstrated ability to play headstrong characters make her a fitting choice for Mac.
